So the starting point to being ‘big’ really has to be about imagining what success looks like to you. It’s important to define just how big your entrepreneurial ambition is? Not everyone dreams of creating a global enterprise, some like myself are just as fulfilled thriving in doing what they love. But if your ambition is BIG, then you’ll need to set really strong foundations to ensure you achieve them.

Once you’ve identified what you want (your vision, which if you think about it is fundamentally tied to imagination), you need to start working out how you are going to get there. What goals do you need to set in order to reach your vision and how specifically are you going to deliver to those goals.

Of course I’m talking about strategy here, setting clear strategic goals and SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-bound) objectives that, are the sure stepping stones and roadmap to success.

Strong strategy gets you to where you want to be, clearly, effectively and efficiently. No detours – making fundamental errors, no lack of focus ‘let’s give this a go and see what happens’, no time wasted as a result of indecision ‘I’m not sure that this is the right thing to do so I won’t do anything.’ We’ve all been there. It’s the very foundations on which your business success is built. Weak and your home will crumble. Strong and your skyscraper will stand the test of time. Think timeless Chrysler building.
